Tailwheel conversion

AeroHeritage - Tailwheel conversion courses

Have you just bought a Piper Cub, but you’ve only ever flown a Cessna 152?

All of the AeroHeritage pilots are experienced on a multitude of tailwheel aircraft, both single and multi engine. We can offer tailwheel conversions on your aircraft, or we can supply an aircraft for you, depending on what sort of tailwheel you are hoping to fly in the future. The conversion course consists of 5 hours groundschool, and approximately 5 hours flying depending on your previous experience.

Taxiing, taking off, landing and braking tailwheel aircraft is a skill that we are happy to teach you and one which may be very different from the nose wheel aircraft which you may have gained your PPL in. Becoming a competent tailwheel pilot can have many rewards and open the door to a whole range of aircraft. Although there are some disadvantages to the tailwheel design, for example, poor taxiing visibility and directional stability on take off / landing, there are many rewards too.

Having gained experience of tailwheel flying a whole range of light aviation will open up to you. You can go on to get checked out on wide range of specialist aeroplanes including the vintage and historic types flown by AeroHeritage and if you are more adventurous and would like to try aerobatics on one of our other courses, you will already have one of the essential skill sets required before you start your training.

Flying P1 in a tailwheel aeroplane is surely one of the most pleasurable activities in light aviation and having worked hard for your PPL you deserve to enjoy the rewards that flying tail draggers undoubtedly offer.

The training syllabus includes the following:

Groundschool - Theory of tailwheel techniques

Ground handling and taxiing

Take off - Grass and hard runways, short field, crosswind techniques
