Farmstrip Flying

AeroHeritage - Farmstrip flying

Many classic aircraft are based at local farmstrips for various reasons, it is cheaper, easier to operate, and being closer to home are just a few of them. However, some pilots may not be used to operating from airfields that are uncontrolled, possibly uneven, have strange approach procedures due to local noise sensitive areas, the list goes on!

AeroHeritage run a ‘Farmstrip flying’ course where we will provide you with enough training so that you will be happy flying into strips that may be a little more demanding than a 1500m runway!

Strips vary enormously. A few are kitted out like licensed airfields, with long, wide, well-maintained runways, hangars and a clubhouse, and even an advisory radio service. Some, set up on disused military airfields, even have hard runways. Most though are humbler, quieter operations, filled with character but requiring particular care.

Our training course will take you through the etiquette required to operate from these strips, and most importantly the potential hazards associated with farmstrips. We can easily become complacent with our local airfield having a nice flat runway, well maintained, offering fuel for the aircraft and the pilot, but farmstrips can be very different.

The rewards of flying from farm strips are enormous: greatly reduced costs, a largely empty circuit, much less fuss about getting airborne, a small, close-knit community of friends, and a whole lot of freedom. Contact us for more details of the farmstrip flying course so you can enjoy the freedom too.
